Final Reflection

Thinking back, the time really went very fast. I still remember my first day of internship, was weird. Actually I had already some idea of what I would be doing at my internship, but still confused of how I would be doing it. My goals were to improve my Spanish and I did so! I actually was speaking Spanish mostly all the time so that’s was how I achieved my goal! My highlights of my internship is going to be when we went to NYU WAGNER  for the First Encuentro of Adelante Alliance and when we went to Union Square for the Primero de Mayo (May First), it was just awesome been there! I want to be an actress after high school. My biggest challenges were be there always on time. Because be on time isn’t what I do all the time, but I am working out about that. So, I guess from being an intern for 125 hours, I learned that being late all the time isn’t a good idea.  If I will start a new brand of internship next week, one thing I will do differently is to stay more on the after school program. Three pieces of advice I would offer a new intern at my site is always be on time, always finish your tasks on time and be very patient with your supervisor. If you do all of that you will get a good credits with your supervisor. But the most important try to do the things there because you want to but not because you have to! I will miss the most about my internship is the people from there and the after school program. They were just awesome.

Thank You Letter

Dear Karla,

Since I left Adelante Alliance, I have been trying to write a message to you saying how grateful I am to have had a supervisor like you, but for various reasons, I hadn't finished until now.

I really enjoyed the time we worked together and I want to thank you! Although the project is not yet completed as we would like, I learned a lot from you and you opened up new horizons that I had never envisioned. You are a wonderful supervisor because you have an innate spirit of leadership, knowing when to praise people and knowing how to encourage people! Thank you for that.

I'm going to miss the conversations we had with the whole group and the friendship I made in Adelante Alliance. I’ll miss all of you every day but I hope that we can stay connected. You have given me some very precious memories that I will not forget.

Sincerely,

Yara Barbosa

This is some of the kids that goes to After School Tutoring in Adelante Alliance.  Roberto was my FAVORITE :)  Thanks to him I started to help little kids do their home works. The boy with white T-shirt is the son of my supervisor (Karla).

This is the place that I used to go everyday. Is a small officer but is full of joy.  In that officer is always busy, in the afternoon is tutore for little kids, and later on is Computer Class. I stayed once for the Computer class, is actually fun and the teacher is very nice and  for the tutoring I was almost always there. I feel proud of the kids, they are learning a lot and their reading process improved a lot by the first time I enter as a intern in Adelante Alliance.

I actually had one computer for myself. It was really fun working by myself for 3 months.  In this computer I used to work more in transcribing Interviews, sending emails and updating the Facebook from Adelante Alliance.

That is Karla Quinonez (my supervisor), me and Ken in Adelante Alliance. I just have to say thank you for my supervisor because in this 3 months working with her, I have learned a lot with her. She is a great mentor. Ken he was my partner during my Internship time.

Reason for choosing this picture, is mostly because I had to sometimes go to 61st with 5av to distribute pamphlets  in the street for help my set have a bigger community. It was actually fun distributing to them, sometimes the people stop and start to talk with me asking what is about, where I have to go. People were very interested about it. Some time I fell so proud because I am helping a community grow.

As my last day being a Intern in Adelante Alliance I watched the movie Precious Knowledge. My supervisor asked me to watch their history. So sweet of her part. This movie made me think a lot in the Mexican lives before, they pass through a lot suffer and they still. They were and are fighting for their rights in USA. In 1948, USA made a border (line) for the Mexican. They couldn't pass through that border, if they did USA will kill them. Tucson High School students and adults were protesting for their rights living in USA.

During this time 48% of Mexican- American students actually drop out of high school. Arizona high school students battle state lawmakers to save their ethnic studies classes. Actually isn't that easier to fight for it. They specially the high school students were trying a lot to get their rights that a lot of them were rest. Based on the movie, a high school student said that doesn't matter what happen to us, what is the matter is what we did for us.
